Here are some of the Digital Media Staff’s favorite Halloween songs!

I’m a Vampire – Future Bible Heroes

“I’m a Vampire” by Future Bible Heroes perfectly meshes dry humor, new wave-y synths, and existential gloom into a danceable Halloween-y track. Hinted at by the title, this song is all about vampires, but not the bloodsucking aspect, but more the delight and drama of immortality. What can I say? I love a good synth-pop twist to a gothic vampire song.

Gothic Surf-A-Rama – Vampire Beach Babes

This is my favorite Halloween song ever, even though it is about…surfing. I’ve always had a soft spot for gothic surf rock, and I blame Rock Lobster for that. I don’t think Halloween music necessarily needs to be spooky or about something scary; it is strictly a vibe. The song also mentions Alabama, so I’m probably a little biased. Another honorable mention of Halloween gothic surfer rock music is Lesbian Vampyres from Outer Space.

On Our Own – Bobby Brown

While many people listen to more spooky tracks to get them in the Halloween spirit, no song gets
me ready for the season more than On Our Own by Bobby Brown from the Ghostbusters II
soundtrack. The classic 80’s synths and cheesy rapping about the Ghostbuster’s exploits always
take me right back to when I was a kid watching the movie for the first time. To me, the light-
hearted attitude the song exudes is synonymous with Halloween and memories of trick-or-
treating, and the poppy drum loops and catchy chorus create a memorable song that I come back
to year after year.

Disturbia – Rihanna

Disturbia: Disturbia is my favorite Halloween song because I really enjoy and appreciate how fun it sounds. The chants of “Bum bum be-dum, bum bum be-dum bum” that play throughout the song are infectious, it has one of my favorite choruses in pop music, and Rihanna delivers a passionate and very catchy vocal performance. The song, lyrically, is about fear and paranoia, but it takes these more frightening themes and makes them into an enjoyable and incredibly catchy 2000s pop track, and does it exceptionally well.

Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) – David Bowie

“Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)”, the title track for David Bowie’s 14th studio album, is an innovative and slightly unsettling song that feels just like Halloween (although I listen to it year-round). Accompanied by distorted dog-barking and a shrill guitar, Bowie’s talk singing tells an eerie story of a strange encounter with a dead-eyed woman. The song and album it is named after is unique and boundary pushing, and I strongly suggest giving it a listen– it’s perfect for the season!

Hex Girls – The Hex Girls (Scooby-Doo and the Witches’ Ghost Movie)

“Hex Girl” is a defining track for the Hex Girls (Jennifer Hale, Jane Wiedlin, and Kimberly Brooks), a fictional band from the 1999 movie “Scooby-Doo and the Witches Ghost”. This song has the signature rock sounds, the classic guitars and drums, but has a haunting melody and enchanting harmonies. This movie is one of my favorites to watch around Halloween; it has the classic Scooby-Doo energy but adds a supernatural twist. The Hex Girls deliver nothing but bangers throughout the movie, “Hex Girl” is just a taste of their talent and power.
