Hotwire Trip Switch – Prince Daddy & The Hyena
Genre: Emo, rock
RIYL: Green Day, Weezer, PUP
As someone who loved the pre-release singles and is a big Prince Daddy & The Hyena fan, my expectations going into Hotwire Trip Switch were dangerously high. Luckily for me (and anyone else who listens to this album) the band did not disappoint. While overall not as immediately catchy as their previous self-titled album, Hotwire Trip Switch only gets better with each listen and is a true testament to how consistently good PD&TH is. If you are a fan of alternative, rock, punk, emo, or just good music in general, give this one a listen.

Frog for Sale – Frog
Genre: Indie Pop, Alt-Country
RIYL: This is Lorelei, Florry, Great Grandpa
I’d like to call myself a Frog fan as I’ve been listening and enjoying for around 3 years now, and I have to admit that this is a bit of a disappointment. The album just feels so disjointed, with little connecting them, besides some inkling of similar sounds. That being said, my biggest gripe with this album and Danny Bateman, the lead singer, is how he talks about girls; it’s just so uncomfortable and icky. His previous records had a similar-ish feel, but at least in the moment, they felt a little more tolerable, or at least on them, but some of the lines on this album genuinely made my skin crawl. I think this will be the first time on the Release Recap that I say I’m not a fan of a band anymore, but yeah, I don’t think Frog is for me anymore, and for that reason, I wouldn’t recommend this.

Under the Rainbow – Shapes Like People
Genre: Dream Pop, Jangle Pop
RIYL: The Sundays, The Smiths, REM
While looking for albums to review for this, I generally try to pick something I’ve never heard of, they are generally pretty ok, but when I tell you this is great, I mean it. Shapes Like People is a husband and wife duo with a little over 1000 monthly listeners on Spotify. This record is twinkly and reminds me of cooler days in the mountains with my great aunt, where I would be so bored, but time would just fly by. I think this is a really fun listen for anyone who enjoys the more dreamy aspects of The Sundays or The Smiths.
