Check out (or maybe avoid) some of the cool releases from last week!

Geese: NPR Tiny Desk Concert
Genre: Alt Rock
RIYL: Racing Mount Pleasant, Black Country, New Road
As a long time Geese fan, and 3D Country Stan, their Tiny Desk debut was a little disappointing, as they only played songs off of their most recent record, Getting Killed. While my immediate reaction was shallow disappointment, I quickly remembered that I still really liked Getting Killed and was excited to watch whatever they were gonna play for their debut. They ended up playing “Husbands”, “Cobra” (my personal favorite from this album), and “Half Real” which all came out really well. While they didn’t play any of their older stuff, I still think it’s worth a watch, as most Tiny Desk’s are.

The Refrigerator – Remember Sports
Genre: Alt Country, Pop Punk
RIYL: Ratboys, Wednesday
If you’re really into the current uprising of Alt Country, but also want a pop punk-y sound you can dance to, this is totally the record for you! Coming after their 2021 release of Like A Stone, which I honestly forget they released, this is a MAJOR step up, and an album I will definitely be coming back to.

COLD 2 THE TOUCH – Angel Du$t
Genre: Hardcore
RIYL: Turnstile, Militarie Gun, Koyo
If there’s one thing Maryland hardcore bands have proven, it’s that they’re not afraid to experiment outside the typical bounds of hardcore and push the boundaries of the genre. On COLD 2 THE TOUCH, Angel Du$t manages to keep the energy and edge expected of them while keeping every track sonically interesting and unique. This album is absolutely worth a listen for both longtime hardcore fans and those trying to get into it.

Masquerade – Cardinals
Genre: post punk and indie rock
RIYL: benches, Arcy Drive, Fontaines D.C.
Irish band Cardinals has mastered what a high-grade indie rock album should be with their debut album Masquerade. In a genre that is usually cursed to settle into mediocrity, Cardinals set themselves apart with intermittent accordion, intentional pacing, diverse influences, and poignant, topical lyrics. There’s something in here for everyone to enjoy. I recommend checking out “St. Agnes,” “I Like You,” and “The Burning of Cork.”

MAN BITES DOG – femtanyl
Genre: Digital Hardcore
RIYL: Machine Girl, Danny Brown, Jane Remover
Femtanyl, a band I was somewhat aware of before last week, released this very interesting record that honestly sounds like something I would hear briefly in a video game and then spend hours trying to find, just to be slightly disappointed. If you are already a fan of them or really like chaotic digital music this might be for you, but it’s definitely not for me.
