The No. 2 ranked Alabama gymnastics team beat Kentucky 196.000-194.700 in Memorial Coliseum Friday night in front of 1,644 fans who braved the snow outside.

Senior Amanda Locke collected three hits and sophomore pitcher Jackie Traina allowed just one as the No. 2 ranked Alabama softball team downed Memphis, 8-0, in five innings Friday afternoon at Jaguar Field. With the win the Crimson Tide improves to 11-5 in opening day games and has now won seven of its last eight openers.

The Alabama softball team will open its 2012 schedule by traveling to Mobile, Ala., this weekend to take part in the Mardi Gras Invitational at Jaguar Field, hosted by South Alabama. Alabama will face off against Memphis and Jacksonville State – both 2011 NCAA tournament participants, Lipscomb – a 2010 NCAA tournament participant and tourney host, South Alabama. Alabama opens tournament play against Memphis at 3 p.m., on Friday, February 10. All games this weekend will be broadcast live on 90.7 and online at wvuafm.ua.edu.

The No. 2 ranked Alabama gymnastics team returns to the road this week, traveling to Lexington, Ky., to take on the Kentucky Wildcats Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. EST. The meet will be broadcast live on 90.7 following softball’s season opener.

The No. 6 ranked Alabama gymnastics team beat No. 3 Florida by a score of 197.725-196.900 in front of 12,457 fans who braved the rain Friday night to be at Coleman Coliseum. It was the second highest score in the nation this year and the highest score for the Crimson Tide since the 2004 season.

The Southeastern Conference unveiled its fifth annual Preseason All-SEC team to highlight the upcoming season of SEC softball. Alabama and Tennessee led all schools with four selections, followed by Florida with three. Auburn and Kentucky had one selection each. Tennessee’s Raven Chavanne, Alabama’s Kayla Braud and Florida’s Brittany Schutte are making their second consecutive appearance to the team.

The University of Alabama softball team came in near the top of both the ESPN.com/USA Softball and USA Today/NFCA Top 25 polls, which were released Tuesday. The Crimson Tide checks in at No. 2 on the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and was ranked third by the USA Today/NFCA poll.
