Tuscaloosa’s own southern-rock establishment, The Dexateens, has returned with their sixth album – the intriguingly dubbed Teenage Hallelujah.  Since forming in 1998, The Dexateens have released 5 records in total, with this most recent record being released through Cornelius Chapel Records. These champions of “Blue Collar Rock” are headed by Elliot McPherson, along with founding member Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers) on bass. This new record also welcomes the trademark finger-picking of Taylor Hollingsworth (Dead Fingers, Conor Oberst). Teenage Hallelujah hits stores on October 7th.

Since their debut, the Dexateens have made a name for themselves by seamlessly fusing true southern rock and gritty garage punk. This new record evokes that classic Dexateen feel, but with a newfound maturity and soul that proves mastery over their craft.

Teenage Hallelujah opens with the energizing cause of “Old Rebel,” steadily spurred on by drummer Brian Gosdin. This opening track presents their forward mission, setting the stage for the truth to be revealed throughout.

Highlights include, but are not nearly limited to: “Alabama Redneck”, “Red Bird Road”, “Curtain Call Candice”, “Jimmy John’s”, and “Down in the Valley”.

The Dexateens are here to share their wisdom, as a good southern band does best. More so, they tell the tale of Tuscaloosa (if not the south as a whole) – at its best and its worst. Whether it’s through the head-banging, shoe-scuffling grit of “Boys With Knives” or the clean swayer found in “Working Hands”, the Dexateens paint the south with an aged integrity.  If they don’t sugarcoat the truths in their lyrics (spoiler alert: they really don’t. Are you surprised?), The Dexateens still find a way to make it easy on our ears. These boys truly reign over their own sound. It’s confident and hits its mark beautifully. The Dexateens are back, y’all. Perhaps we couldn’t have asked for a better time.
