Release Recap is a weekly series where WVUA will highlight new music that we like and some that just missed the mark. This is not the first of this series, but this will be the first of our more consistent run. If you are interested in checking out any of the music we write about here, click on the images above each section.

You Have A Way With Last Words – mydiarytoyou!
Post-Hardcore, Mall Screamo
Listen if you like: Taking Back Sundays, Her Words Kill, At the Drive-In

You Have A Way With Last Words brings me back to a time I can only wish I was sentient for, the days of mall emo. Between the whiney vocals and chaotic instrumentals, this five song EP has been in my daily rotation since it released.

Secret Love – Dry Cleaning
Indie Rock, Post-Punk
Listen if you like: Horsegirl, Yard Act, Squid

Secret Love, and Dry Cleaning as a whole took me a second to get on board with. Having a more deadpan, low energy style with vocals I can only really describe as ‘talk-singing’ but not yet spoken word. I think this album is a fun listen but not something I imagine I’ll really come back to, but I still think it’s worth a listen.

Kerosene Heights Audio Tree
Emo, Punk
Listen to if you like: Arms Length, saturdays at your place

As the latest addition to Audiotree’s roster, Kerosene Heights cement their status as talented live artists and prove why their 2024 album “Blame It On The Weather” is a must-listen for anyone in the emo-punk sphere. Packed full of catchy choruses, powerful riffs, and hard hitting lyrics that seemingly know exactly how you’re feeling, this release manages to balance the catharsis of a live performance while still maintaining the tightness of the recordings. If you can’t go see them live, this recording is a worthy substitute in the meantime.

Xiu Mutha F****in Xiu: Vol. 1 – Xiu Xiu
Post-Industrial
Cover Album

This is a weird one for most, but if you like Xiu Xiu, I have no doubt you will enjoy this cover album! As a huge fan of David Burn and The Talking Heads, I was overjoyed to see that one of my favorite bands, Xiu Xiu, was covering “Psycho Killer.” While this doesn’t have the pull of some of their other albums, you should definitely check out the tracks that might interest you, like the previously mentioned “Psycho Killer” or maybe The Runaway’s “Cherry Bomb.”

“A Hero’s Grave” and “Mike Nolan’s Long Weekend” ft. Bad Luck – Free Throw
Emo-Pop, Pop-Punk
Listen if you like: Hot Mulligan, Mom Jeans, TRSH

Let me start by saying that I’m not a huge fan of the sound of modern Free Throw, but these singles are really good, especially “Mike Nolan’s Long Weekend.” While falling short from some of their previous works, I’m still rather excited to see how this album comes out.
