Alabama Poverty Project Announces Screening of Lunch Line Documentary at Bama Theatre To Be Followed by Taste $2.72 Event with Local Restaurants/Caterers

WHEN: Sunday, February 13, 2011 3-6 pm
WHERE: The Bama Theatre 600 Greensboro Avenue
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, 35401

The Alabama Poverty Project will present the Tuscaloosa premiere of Lunch Line, a film focused on the child nutrition program in America on Sunday, February 13 from 3-6 pm.

The Tuscaloosa screening will be followed by a Taste $2.72 school lunch awareness event. Local restaurants will sam- ple servings of foods they could sell for $2.72, the amount of money allocated per child per meal for the Child Nutrition Program in Tuscaloosa. General admission tickets for the documentary premiere and tasting are $15 per person and $5 for students including University of Alabama and Stillman College students.

“Lunch Line reveals the National School Lunch Program’s history and the unexpected ways it has grown and changed over the years to feed more than 31 million children every day,” said Michael Graziano, who co-directed the film with Ernie Park.

“The film pulls back the curtain to reveal, through school lunch, how large-scale social change can work,” Park added.

Currently, 54 percent of Alabama children receive free or federally reduced school lunches. Kristina Scott, executive di- rector of the Alabama Poverty Project, says now is the time for Alabamians to engage in discussions about childhood nutrition and food security.

“We are the hungriest state and the second most overweight state in the country. Food security is not just about having enough to eat; it is also about access to adequate nutrition, which many low-income Alabamians lack,” said Scott.
Alabama is the ninth poorest state in the country, and one in every four Alabama children live below the federal poverty line. The Alabama Poverty Project and its Alabama Possible movement mobilize Alabamians to eliminate poverty by working with higher education institutions, faith-based organizations and civic groups.
