TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Friday night’s Alabama women’s volleyball match against South Carolina will be the first event of the Athletics department’s third annual “Power of Pink” program, sponsored by Tuscaloosa Toyota. During the Southeastern Conference match on Friday, fans will have the opportunity to win prizes, in addition to receiving giveaway items at the match.

“Alabama does everything first class and the Power of Pink is another example where the University cares above and beyond expectations,” head volleyball coach Ed Allen said. “The initiative provides an opportunity for this institution to make an impact for breast cancer awareness, and is just one way to show our support for a cure.”

Prior to the start of the match, the first 400 fans through the door will receive a “Power of Pink” t-shirt. Throughout the contest, fans will have an opportunity to win hats, tervis tumblers, pink volleyballs, and other items. One lucky fan will win an iPad through a raffle.

The initiative, originally started in 2004 by Crimson Tide gymnastics coach Sarah Patterson to raise awareness in the fight against breast cancer in the West Alabama community, grew to include all women’s teams at the Capstone in the fall of 2009.

“As female athletes at the University of Alabama we’re in the public eye and sometimes we don’t realize the importance of things and people we have in our lives,” senior volleyball player Stephanie Riley said. “Breast cancer affects everyone in some way, and the Power of Pink events represent our effort to show support to all the individuals that have been impacted by breast cancer.”

The match will air live on 90.7 FM with Marq Burnett and Grave Shaheen calling the action.
