“She’s an administrative assistant, first off,” Georgia head coach Mark Richt said quickly when asked about one of his secretaries, Tammie Mettenberger, the mother of LSU quarterback Zach. “If she wants to take a week off (the week Georgia plays LSU), we surely can work that out.

“She loves her boy.”

Richt will shortly have to worry less about Mrs. Mettenberger’s psyche and more about his team, as he has his team, “in a race,” to midseason form as the Bulldogs open the season with the Clemson Tigers.

“My guess is we’ll both be top 10 teams,” Richt said. “Their offensive team is one of the best in America. Tajh Boyd is one of the best quarterbacks in the nation.

“Playing in their place will be tough.”

While the Bulldogs have a task to be reckoned with to open the season, Richt’s thoughts stay on the end of it: how Georgia did not end it the way it wanted to last season and what is at stake.

“Last year, I think we felt how close you can come and just not quite be able to get it done,” Richt said. “Our goal is to get to Atlanta and to win. In our league, if you can win the conference, you’re going to have a chance to play for a national championship.”
