Saturdays in the spring semester can seem a bit lacking at times for University of Alabama students. Compared to the fall, Saturdays feel as if there is a great absence on campus. The Quad suffers a dearth of its vigorous pomp and circumstance that so often defines the Capstone, and the rowdy camaraderie of benevolent strangers isn’t present. However, if you crave the excitement of Alabama sports, and are feeling a bit adventurous, consider a day trip to Birmingham this Saturday.

Birmingham is a scant 50-60 miles from Tuscaloosa, and can make an excellent day trip for any UA student. Birmingham includes several shopping districts, be it downtown or dotted along Highway 280. Down on Lakeshore Drive, the beautiful Samford University sits nestled in the hills of Homewood, right next to the Lakeshore Foundation.

Starting on 3/7/13, the Lakeshore Foundation began hosting the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Tournament. The University of Alabama’s Men’s Basketball team is seeded second, and won their first game against Southwestern Minnesota State, 58-31. Ryan Hynes led the Tide with 18 points. The men will face Illinois at 5 p.m. Friday. The women’s team begin competition against Illinois Friday at 1.

While in Birmingham, there are several great restaurants one can visit, such as local hamburger favorites Milo’s and Jack’s. Birmingham locals also enjoy their healthy portions of Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q, a Birmingham staple. For a Saturday day trip to break the monotony for the adventurous UA Weekend Warrior, a trip to Birmingham for UA Athletics, good food, and a good time seem like an ideal Saturday.

Matt Moore is a sophomore majoring in public relations and political science. Along with Maggie O’Keeffe, he will be covering the action live for WVUA 90.7 The Capstone.
