Birmingham’s future downtown baseball stadium was given an official name and hailed as a major amenity for the city during a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site Thursday.

Mayor William Bell and Birmingham Barons owner Don Logan were among the speakers at the symbolic beginning of the $64 million baseball park and museum project near Railroad Park.

Officials announced that Regions Financial Corp. will be the title sponsor, naming the new 8,500-seat stadium Regions Field.

Bell said the estimated 1,000 people gathered at the western edge of Railroad Park were clear evidence that the ballpark has widespread support, contrary to early naysayers.

“It says this project has had community support from day one,” he said. “This is a great day for the city of Birmingham.” More Here.
