TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – In the final non-conference match of the season, the Alabama volleyball team made short work of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, winning the match 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-9) at Foster Auditorium on Tuesday night in just over an hour. The Crimson Tide is now 6-0 all-time against the in-state foe.

“We had a balanced attack offensively,” head coach Ed Allen said. “We’re real pleased that we were able to spread the ball around, with four attackers within a few kills of each other as Cortney and Leigh led us in kills with 11 each. It was nice to see Leigh have a productive night and Cortney had some balls where she was able to get some quality swings.”

The Tide (8-9) was led by junior middle blocker Leigh Moyer, who had 11 kills with a .500 hitting percentage. Moyer was matched by Cortney Warren’s 11 kills, as the sophomore outside hitter posted a career-high .667 hitting percentage.

Alabama posted a .420 hitting percentage as a team, posting 45 kills on 88 attempts with just eight errors. The Tide held the Bulldogs (5-15) to a -.045, the lowest hitting percentage for a UA opponent this season. AAMU recorded just 16 kills while making 20 hitting errors. Alabama finished the night with six blocks, as Warren led the way with three total blocks, including one solo.

“We did a nice job at the service line and that applied some pressure to their side out offense,” Allen said. “We touched quite a few balls at the net and were able to transition those balls productively, and their 20 hitting errors also contributed to a low hitting number for them.”

Andrea McQuaid posted a match-high 19 assists, while Stephanie Riley added 17 for the Tide. Christina Arenas had a match-high 12 digs and Kelsey Melito, who was playing in her first match of the season, recorded a match-high two service aces and a pair of digs. Kayla Fitterer had nine kills and Shelbi Goode added eight.

Alabama opened the night by getting off to a quick start, opening a 10-3 lead against the Bulldogs. The Tide’s early first set surge was sparked by four points by Moyer, who had three kills and an ace early in the set. Moyer finished the first set with six kills, one better than Fitterer, as Alabama rolled to a 25-12 win. UA hit .412 in the set as Moyer was 6-for-8 for a .750 hitting mark in set one.

In set two, UA continued to dominate the match, opening a 12-3 lead. The Tide led 22-10 following a kill by Fitterer, which was her eighth of the night. The final point came on a kill by Moyer after an over ball from a Fitterer serve. The Tide won the second set 25-12.

In the third set, UA secured the win over the Bulldogs with a 25-9 win. Alabama hit a whopping .619 in the final set, compared to Alabama A&M’s -.040. Warren and Goode combined for eight kills (four each) in the set, take a total of nine swings with no errors in the third.

Alabama returns to action this weekend with a pair of road Southeastern Conference matches at No. 19 Tennessee and Kentucky. The Tide takes on the Lady Vols on Friday with first serve at 6 p.m. CT, from the Thompson-Boling Arena. The week comes to an end with a 12:30 p.m. CT, match against the Wildcats from Memorial Coliseum.
