The United Way of Central Alabama has announced ways for individuals to donate to the devastating disaster that took place on April 27, 2011 throughout the state of Alabama and other parts of the south. The United Way has established a Text-to-Donate number. By simply texting the word TORNADO to 50555, individuals can give $10 to the relief efforts in Alabama. Donations can also be accepted online at the United Way’s website for Central Alabama or mailed to UNITED WAY TORNADO RELIEF FUND, P.O. Box 320189, Birmingham, AL 35232.

Donations will also be taken during the Tornado Relief Telethon hosted by WVTM Alabama’s 13 and the United Way on May 4, 2011 starting at 4:00 am, CST. The telethon will be streamed online at www.alabama13.com and will also air a live three-hour prime time special on WVTM Alabama’s 13 from 6:30pm to 10:00pm on Wednesday night. Volunteers of the United Way Hands on Birmingham will be stationed at the Corporate Headquarters of Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Birmingham, Alabama to take calls and donations. The number to call during the telethon to place a donation is 1-855-205-HELP. The number is toll free and will not be active till 4:00 am, CST on Wednesday. The telethon will conclude at 2:00am, CST on Thursday morning.
